Fever blisters are a type of disorders of the mouth. This condition is characterized by the formation of small sores in or around the mouth. It causes discomfort to the sufferer. Fever blisters are also known as cold sores and are commonly found outside the mouth. These are mostly found on chin, nostrils, cheeks or lips. Sometimes, these also develop inside the mouth on the gums or the roof of the mouth. Fever blisters are known to spread through contact and hence touch or direct skin contact with the patient must be avoided. Fever blisters are mostly accompanied by swelling in neck glands, general pains or fever. A crust which is yellow in color develops over the sores. Ice Packs- The application of ice packs over the blisters helps in soothing down the discomfort caused by them. You can even prevent development of blisters by applying ice packs for 5 to 10 minutes after every hour during the initial stage.
Honey- Similarly, honey also helps in healing blisters to a great extent. Honey is to be applied directly over the blisters. The anti-viral, antibiotic and anti-fungal properties of honey help in reducing the period of fever blisters.
Tea Bags- Similar to honey, tannic acid present in tea bags is also full of antiviral properties. Direct application of tea bags over the infected area helps in prevention of further development of blisters.
Paying attention to diet– If a person suffers from fever blisters more often, he must pay attention to his diet. He should take foods rich in Vitamin B complex and folic acid. Apart from this, some foods must be avoided also. These include foods rich in arginine e.g. whole grains, chocolate, oatmeal, peanuts and nuts. Similarly, a person should avoid taking foods spicy and salty foods plus coffee when he is suffering from fever blisters.
Aloe Vera– The sap of Aloe Vera is known to cure fever blisters effectively. You can cut an Aloe Vera leaf laterally. Using a spoon, remove sap from it and apply the same over the affected area.
Petroleum jelly- In order to keep blisters formed as a result of fever blisters, you must apply petroleum jelly over them. It also helps in prevention of splitting or rupturing of fever blisters.
Lemon Balm extract– Since fever blisters are quite discomforting, therefore immediate relief is very much required in this condition. Lemon balm extract helps in providing instantaneous relief from pain or discomfort by its direct application over blisters. It also helps in speeding up the healing process.
Baking Soda- It is well-known fact that baking soda is alkaline in nature. Due to this property, it helps in prevention of reproduction of blisters. It is because blisters are also a form of herpes which can’t replicate in alkaline medium. Therefore, you can stop further development of blisters by applying baking soda over them.
