Tips to Treat Gout
Gout refers to a physical ailment in human body which is caused due to excess of uric acid in joint tissue. It is a common form of inflammatory arthritis among men. Gout is mainly caused by high uric acid in the blood. The kidney becomes unable to break down waste products known as purines. This in turn leads to formation of uric acid crystals in the body joints. Some of the symptoms of gout include pain, redness or warmth in some or multiple joints of the body. The pain usually starts at night and is quite intense. There is also the shedding or itchiness in the skin around the affected joints. By taking some points into consideration, gout can be treated.
Gout test- First of all you need to get the gout tested. It is done by taking a sample of fluid from the joint of your body. The fluid is tested under a microscope. A serum urate test may also be required. It helps in detection of uric acid circulating in the body.
Proper resting– The joint that is suffering from inflammation must be rested properly and elevated as well. In case, you have gout in toe or knee, you should avoid walking off it.
Nutritional changes– You must consume more cherries and strawberries. Purines-rich foods such as dried legumes, sardines, organ meats etc. must be avoided. Drink two to three quarters of water per day. The alcoholic beverages and smoking must be avoided.
Cold Compression– You should apply ice to the affected part by wrapping it in ice bag or a towel. Apply ice for 20 minutes and remove it for next 20 minutes. Repeat the same process as long as you can.
Removing extra clothes– You must keep extra weight of clothes or any blankets off from inflamed joint. It is because extra weight worsens the condition even more.
Medications- You must also take medicines for gout. Medicines such as naproxen and indomethacin are known to cure gout effectively. If suggested by a physician, you can also take corticosteroid. It can be taken orally or even injected into the joint suffering from gout.
Lowering the level of uric acid in urine- You can also use probenecid or sulfinpyrazone to lower the level of uric acid in your urine. These drugs help in enhancing the flow of uric acid into the urine. But these must be taken only after consulting with a doctor.
Blockage of metabolic conversion of purines into uric acids- It is done by intake of allupurinol. Again it helps in decreasing the level of uric acid in the blood stream. But this drug must also be taken only after discussing with doctor.
All these ways help in treatment of gout to a great extent. Rest you must keep visiting a specialized doctor for regular tests and check-ups. It is required to keep a check over uric acid content in the blood and the joints.
