What is Scabies and some tips to treat it
Scabies is a common skin condition which causes severe itching on the affected areas. Pimple-like rashes appear on the skin due to burrowing of scabies mites or Sarcoptes scaibiei in the skin. It is a communicable disease and spreads from one person to the other through skin contact or sexual contact with the infected person. Even sharing of clothes or other things with the infected person spread this transmittable disease. Although scabies is caused due to scabies mites but it is not caused due to being dirty. It can be treated by taking some preventive as well as curative measures.
Using insecticide lotion– If you get caught with scabies, treat your body with an insecticide lotion rich in 5% permethrin. Apply lotion on the entire body from neck to toes and leave it on for 4 to 5 hours. Then take a shower to remove the lotion. It is advisable to treat all members of the house to clear out infections from the home completely. Apart from permethrin, you can also use lindane, crotamiton or benzyl benzoate lotion. It is always advisable to consult your doctor before using any lotion as some restrictions need to be followed while using these lotions as far as age, sex or other conditions of the infected person are concerned.
Neem and turmeric: The oil of neem tree has properties similar to permethrin insecticide. It is also rich in azadirachtin property which prevents reproduction of scabies mites by directly affecting their hormones. The powder of turmeric also has antiseptic properties and helps in getting rid of itchiness in the skin. The person who suffers from scabies can take bathe in a warm scrub of oats and then apply the paste of neem and turmeric over his body and leave it to dry.
Tea Tree: It is rich in multiple properties which help in treating scabies. These properties include antibacterial, anti-fungal and insect-repelling properties. You can add 20 drops of tea tree oil to warm water and take bath in it. Following this, you can apply tea tree oil directly to the affected areas with the help of uncontaminated cotton two times a day continuously for three weeks. It helps in treating scabies with all its symptoms rapidly.
Apart from these treatments, it is also important to pay attention to some other points while treating scabies. These are mentioned below.
Washing clothes in hot water– To ensure that scabies mites are completely removed from your place, you must wash all clothes including towels, bed sheets, pillow covers etc. used before treatment in hot water. Also dry them using a hot dryer to be completely sure about removal of mites from the clothes. Big clothing items such as blankets and quilts may be sealed in large bags. It keeps scabies mites away from human parasites and hence leads to their death.
Dry cleaning other items- Not only clothes all other items must also be dry cleaned which were used by the patient. Some objects may not be washable and hence dry cleaning assures removal of mites from them. Freezing also serves same purpose and hence you can also freeze non-washable items for 24 hours.
